This state-mandated CE course is designed specifically for nursing professionals practicing in Florida and provides a current, evidence-based overview of HIV/AIDS. The course addresses essential clinical knowledge, recent epidemiologic trends, legal requirements, and public health responsibilities associated with HIV prevention, testing, and care delivery. It is suitable for nurses working across a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, correctional health, long-term care, and community health programs.

Participants will gain an updated understanding of HIV pathophysiology, modes of transmission, and stages of disease progression. Emphasis is placed on early detection, antiretroviral therapy (ART), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and the prevention of opportunistic infections. The course also explores the nurse's role in patient education, counseling, and ethical considerations such as confidentiality, informed consent, and Florida-specific reporting laws.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the current epidemiology and transmission mechanisms of HIV/AIDS.
  • Explain the pathophysiology and natural course of untreated HIV infection.
  • Identify current treatment options, including ART and strategies to prevent resistance.
  • Understand the principles and indications for PrEP and PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis).
  • Apply Florida laws regarding HIV testing, reporting, confidentiality, and partner notification.
  • Integrate culturally sensitive and stigma-reducing practices when caring for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
