This 2-hour CE course is developed for perioperative personnel, including registered nurses, nurse anesthetists, surgical technologists, and anesthesia providers, to enhance clinical preparedness and response to malignant hyperthermia (MH), a rare, life-threatening pharmacogenetic disorder triggered by certain anesthetic agents. The course emphasizes rapid identification, emergency management, and post-crisis care to optimize patient safety in surgical settings.
Participants will review the underlying pathophysiology of MH, including the role of abnormal calcium regulation in skeletal muscle and the genetic mutations most commonly associated with the condition. The course outlines known pharmacologic triggers such as volatile anesthetics and depolarizing muscle relaxants, as well as the early clinical manifestations of MH including hypercapnia, muscle rigidity, tachycardia, and rising body temperature.
Comprehensive guidance is provided on immediate interventions, with a focus on the critical steps of the MH crisis protocol. Emphasis is placed on the timely administration of dantrolene sodium, supportive measures such as active cooling and electrolyte correction, and the organization of the surgical team during the event. The course also covers the proper preparation and stocking of an MH emergency cart, as recommended by the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS).
Post-crisis care, including ICU monitoring, genetic counseling referral, and patient/family education, is also addressed. Realistic case scenarios reinforce learning and highlight the role of effective teamwork and rapid communication in improving patient outcomes during perioperative emergencies.
